That's a national average, not your price. EIA's regional data for the same week put the West Coast at $5.117/gallon and the Gulf Coast at $3.690 — a $1.43/gallon spread.
Fuel is typically less than half your real cost per mile. AAA's 2025 study puts maintenance alone at roughly 11-12 cents/mile for a typical sedan — often close to what fuel costs.
The IRS just raised its own business mileage reimbursement rate mid-year, from 72.5 to 76 cents/mile effective July 1, 2026 — the first mid-year bump since 2022, explicitly because of fuel costs.
EVs generally win on fuel/energy cost per mile, but higher insurance and depreciation costs eat into that advantage — the full picture matters more than the pump-vs-plug headline number.
I filled up twice this month and watched the total climb both times. So I did what I always do when a number starts to feel personal instead of abstract: I went and found the actual data, instead of trusting my gut or the gas station sign down the street from my own kitchen table.
Here's the anchor number: as of the week ending July 27, 2026, the U.S. Energy Information Administration's weekly survey put the national average price for regular gasoline at $4.096 a gallon. That's up $0.973 — roughly 31% — from the same week a year earlier. It's also the fourth straight weekly increase, with prices climbing about 32 cents just since the start of July. AAA has been tracking the same move, citing crude oil volatility near the Strait of Hormuz pushing oil into the $90-a-barrel range.
I want to be upfront about something before we go further: gas prices are published weekly, not as a fixed fact. Whatever number you read in a headline today could be a week stale by the time you act on it. So treat the $4.096 figure as "as of July 27, 2026," not as gospel — check EIA's own page (linked in Sources below) if you're reading this later.

This isn't a one-week spike I'm cherry-picking — it's a five-week climb. The pace of the increase has been the story as much as the level: two of the last three weeks saw jumps of nine or more cents.

The rise has been sharp enough that the IRS took the unusual step of raising its own standard business mileage rate mid-year — from 72.5 to 76 cents per mile, effective July 1, 2026 — citing "the increase in the cost of fuel." That's the first mid-year adjustment since 2022. AAA's own data, cited in the IRS's reasoning, showed regular gas going from $2.819/gallon on January 8 to $3.890 by July 15 — a 38% jump in about six months.
The average hides where you actually live
A national average is a useful headline and a mediocre guide to your actual life. Gasoline prices vary by region for reasons that have nothing to do with how much you drive: refining capacity, pipeline access, state taxes, and local supply logistics all create real, persistent gaps.

That's a $1.43-a-gallon spread between the West Coast and the Gulf Coast in the same week. If you drive 12,000 miles a year at 28 MPG, that spread alone is worth roughly $613 a year — before you've changed a single driving habit. If someone tells you "gas is $4.10 right now" without specifying where, they're rounding away a genuinely large chunk of your actual budget.
Gas per gallon is not your cost per mile
Here's where the pump-price headlines quietly mislead people: fuel is usually less than half of what a mile of driving actually costs you. AAA's 2025 Your Driving Costs study — the most recent version available — put maintenance alone at 11.91 cents per mile for a medium sedan, which is close to what fuel itself costs at these prices. Add insurance, financing, depreciation, and licensing, and AAA's own total-cost-per-mile figure for a medium sedan at 15,000 miles a year comes out to about 66 cents a mile — nearly three times the fuel-only number.
Pro Tip
If you've only ever budgeted "gas money" for your commute, you've been underestimating your real driving cost by a wide margin. Maintenance, insurance, and depreciation don't show up on a gas station sign, but they show up on your bank statement eventually.
I also want to be honest about my own bias here: it's tempting to treat the sticker price at the pump as the cost of driving because it's the number you see most often, in the biggest font, updated most frequently. That visibility distorts how people budget. The less visible costs are often larger.

A quick sanity check on the defaults: at $4.10/gal and 28 MPG, fuel alone runs about 14.6 cents a mile. Add a modest 22-cent maintenance-and-insurance estimate and you're at roughly 37 cents a mile before financing or depreciation even enter the picture — for 150 miles a week, that's already close to $240 a month, and most commuters drive more than that once errands and weekend trips are counted. Swap in the West Coast gas price instead of the national average and the same commuter lands closer to $260 a month on fuel and upkeep alone — a real $20-plus swing driven purely by geography, before anything about how the car is driven changes. The point isn't that any single number here is "correct" — it's that small, realistic adjustments to the inputs move the total by real dollars, which is exactly why a calculator beats a headline number.
Gas vs. EV: the honest comparison
The EV-versus-gas comparison usually gets flattened into "electricity is cheaper than gasoline," which is true on energy cost alone but incomplete as a full ownership comparison. Using AAA's 2025 study figures for a medium sedan at 15,000 miles/year:

The EV wins clearly on fuel and maintenance — no oil changes, cheaper "fuel" even at today's elevated national electricity price of 18.83 cents/kWh (the same April 2026 national residential average I used in my piece on why electric bills keep climbing). But AAA's data shows EVs currently running meaningfully higher on insurance and, especially, depreciation — enough that the all-in cost per mile is actually higher for the EV in this particular dataset. That's not an anti-EV argument; it's a reminder that "cheaper to fuel" and "cheaper to own" are different claims, and the gap between them is shrinking as EV depreciation curves mature and insurers get more data. If you're comparing a specific gas car to a specific EV, run both through the calculator above rather than trusting either headline.

Don't assume an EV is automatically cheaper overall. Run the full comparison — fuel/energy savings can be partly or fully offset by insurance and depreciation depending on the specific vehicle and your driving pattern.
If you commute long distances, revisit whether remote or hybrid work, carpooling, or transit changes the math. At current all-in costs of roughly 60-90 cents a mile, a 30-mile round-trip commute five days a week is easily $700-$1,000+ a month once you count everything.
If you're self-employed or drive for work, track mileage properly. The IRS's mid-2026 mileage rate hike to 76 cents/mile is a meaningful deduction if you qualify and keep a real log — most people who could claim it don't track well enough to substantiate it.
Recheck gas prices before making decisions based on them. Weekly EIA data moves fast in a volatile crude market — a number that's a few weeks old can already be meaningfully out of date.
