But there's one figure everyone repeats — the $2 billion development budget — that does not check out the way people think it does, and I want to be precise about which is which.

Let's start with what's actually confirmed, because in a topic this hyped, that matters more than usual.

That guidance is aggressive but not fantastical — Wall Street has largely bought in. TTWO stock closed around $245 on July 31, 2026, giving the company a market cap in the mid-$40 billions, and at least one analyst (BofA) has set a price target as high as $368 on the strength of expected GTA Online spending growth once GTA 6 launches. This is the part I want to be careful about, because it's the number most likely to get miscopied into "fact" by the time it reaches you third-hand.
You'll see "$2 billion" attached to GTA 6's development cost constantly. It is not a figure Take-Two has disclosed in any SEC filing, earnings release, or official statement. It traces back to a mix of analyst estimates (some bundling years of marketing and live-service spend together with development), leaked/rumored figures, and social-media amplification that favored the rounder, bigger number. The more conservative analyst estimates — the kind reported by outlets like Business Insider — put pure development spend closer to $1 billion to $1.5 billion, with the full $1.5–2 billion range only reached once marketing and post-launch investment gets folded in.
Treat the budget number as a range, not a fact
When you see "$2 billion" reported as GTA 6's budget, ask what it's counting. Development-only estimates run lower (~$1–1.5B). Development-plus-marketing-plus-live-service estimates run toward $2B or beyond. Take-Two has confirmed neither figure directly — everything here is outside analyst modeling, not company disclosure.
For context, this still dwarfs the roughly $265 million commonly cited for GTA V's development budget over a decade ago — though that comparison is also apples-to-oranges, since a decade of AAA game-cost inflation, marketing complexity, and studio headcount growth separates the two. Whatever the real number turns out to be, the point I'd push back on is treating any of these budget figures as audited. They're estimates, reported with varying rigor, and the honest move is to say so every time instead of letting the biggest number stick because it's the most quotable.
What 230 million units actually tells you
The other number doing a lot of work in every "will GTA 6 be profitable" conversation is GTA V's lifetime sales. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed on the May 21, 2026 earnings call that GTA V has sold approximately 230 million copies — the second-best-selling video game ever, trailing only Minecraft's roughly 350 million.
